Online or In-Person Kat Starr Music offers a collaborative, inside-out approach to Private Music Lessons.
From beginner to stage-ready training, we have highly qualified teachers who offer a compassionate and friendly approach to mastering your instrument. Close to Cookeville, TN, we have been serving Cookeville, Sparta, Algood, Livingston, and surrounding cities since 2009.
We teach violin, fiddle, viola, cello, bass, guitar, ukulele, mandolin, banjo, piano, flute, and voice.
We love beginners and strive to bring out the musician in each person.
KSM has served hundreds of musicians since 2009, and we offer a unique, individualized approach to music. A comprehensive, ground-up approach to excellent technique is the foundation of all our lessons. We make sure our students’ movement is healthy and balanced. Music theory is an important part of all our lessons as well, making sure that each of our students understands *what* they play, not just how to play it. Our highly trained music teachers love to show students how to read music, so that they will be able to play anything they desire. And, we also like to teach our students how to play by ear. This is important so that they are well-rounded musicians, and can “sit in” with other musicians who do not read music. When a student knows how to hear chord progressions and create harmonies without written sheet music, they can not only play with others, but better access the music that is inside themselves! Our students who express interest in songwriting learn how to create lyrics and melodies that they then put to chords. Many of our private music lesson students have performed their own songs at our recitals!
Students can learn together when they choose the option of lessons with a friend or family member. This opens the door for learning how to play as a band! Learning music with someone else creates a community-oriented and fun experience that allows students to learn both how to take the lead, and how to accompany someone else.
All of our teachers have ensemble/band experience so we are ready to help others enjoy the experience of group learning! Because we offer such a vast array of instruments, it is possible to try lessons on different instruments without changing studios. Sometimes without even changing teachers! Many of our teachers are multi-instrumentalists, and we encourage curiosity and musical experimentation in our students as well. We believe that learning something on one instrument elevates your understanding and abilities on all instruments. Above all, we do not do shame here. We believe that it is our responsibility to make music accessible to all of our students. And if a student doesn’t understand something, we have many ways of explaining concepts and breaking big things down to make music understandable.
At our core, “bringing out the musician in you” is why we are here, and we want to help you reach your musical potential.
